NALANDA
Nalanda was the most renowned university in
ancient India. It derived its name from Na-alam-da, meaning Insatiable in
Giving, one of the names by which the Lord Buddha was known. Established in the
5th century B.C. it remained a live center of learning till the 12th century
A.D. when it was destroyed by the invader Bakhtiar Khilji. Lord Mahavira and the
Buddha both taught here for years. Hsuan Tsang. the Chinese traveler studied
here in the 7th century A.D. and there is a monument in his memory. He was one
amongst many of those from East and Southeast Asia who came here to study logic,
meta-physics, medicine, prose composition and rhetoric. The university of
Nalanda offered free educational and residential facilities to as many as 10,000
students and 2000 teachers, for it was supported by a number of villages. Its
library, Ratna Sagar, is believed to have contained nine million volumes. It is
not surprising, then, that the destruction of this university dealt a crippling
blow to Buddhist education in India. The picturesque Rajgir, or Rajagriha as it was
known in the past (literally, the abode of kings) is surrounded by the
meandering river Banganga and 5 hills. During the lifetime of the Buddha
this was the capital of the powerful Magadha kingdom, ruled by the virtuous King
Bimbisara. The hills and caves surrounding Rajagriha were home to spiritual
teachers, ranging from the materialism of the early Charavaka school to the
metaphysics of Upanishadic philosophers. DAY 07 :

Rashtrapati Bhavan
- The official residence of the President of India stands at the opposite end of
the Rajpath from India Gate. Completed in 1929, the palace-like building is a
blend of Mughal and Western architectural styles, the most obvious Indian
feature being the huge copper dome. Sansad Bhavan
- Sansad Bhavan or the Parliament House from outside presents an unbroken circle
of high buff pillars, and a higher storey (not originally planned) that screens
a central dome. It was in this building the constituent assembly sat for three
years to prepare the constitution of free India. Built on three levels, it has a
red sand stone foundation storey, a buff coloured storey with 144 pillars and a
small attic storey. Specially imported acoustic tiles were used on the walls and
sound absorbing plaster on the ceiling. The Parliament library is one of the
most impressive in Asia. The Parliament House has amazing constructive geometric
qualities. AGRA AGRA is home to the world famous Taj Mahal.
Agra was the capital of the Moguls in 16th - 17th centuries. It was under
Emperor Akbar that the city first aspired to its heights of magnificence. The other Moguls, Jahangir did not stay here long but it's
Shah Jehan whose name is inevitably connected with Agra. He built the Jama
Masjid and most of the buildings inside the Agra Fort and famous Taj Mahal. In
the modern times, the city of Agra is a thriving carpet industry and marble
sculpture. TAJ MAHAL - built by Mughal Emperor Shahjahan in 1630 in
memory of his beloved Queen Mumtaz Mahal, to enshrine her mortal remains. The
monument has been described as the most extravagant ever built for love, the
emperor was heart broken when the Mumtaz, to whom he had been married for 17
years, died in 1627 in childbirth soon after delivering the 12th child. Agra Fort. Situated on the banks of river Yamuna, northwest of the Taj
Mahal, this majestic fort was started by the Emperor Akbar, and it developed as
a stronghold of the Mughal Empire under successive generations. This majestic
fortress of red sandstone encompasses, within its 2.5- km-long enclosure walls,
the imperial city of the Mughal rulers. It comprises many visionary palaces,
such as the Jahangir Palace and the Khas Mahal, built by ~ Shah Jahan; audience
halls, such as the Diwan-i-Khas; and two very beautiful mosques. Amar Singh gate
towards the south is the entry point in the fort and the mammoth walls of the
fort are 20 feet high. The building and structures inside the fort gives an
impression of a city within the city. The marble pearl mosque inside the fort is
one of the most stunningly beautiful mosques in India. Between the many
pavilions, you find small well maintained gardens. Fatehpur Sikri The city of Fatehpur Sikri served as the capital of the
Mughal empire between 1570 and 1586. But as abruptly as it had been built, it
was abandoned. A popular legend is ttached to the city's conception. According
to it, Emperor Akbar was without a male heir, and therefore, made a pilgrimage
to seek the blessings of the powerful saint Sheikh Salim Chisti. His prayer was
fulfilled, and soon, a on was born to him. In honour of the saint, Akbar named
the prince Salim, and decided to found a new city to celebrate his birth. And
thus, the magnificent Fatehpur Sikri, the new into being. The city was intended to embody the noble ideals, and the
humanitarian bent of this dynamic emperor. Although a Muslim, Akbar was famous
for his incredible tolerance towards other religions, and he is said to have
indulged in a great deal of study and discussion in this field, in his new
capital. He also created a new religion, Deen - e - Elahi which attempted to
fuse positive aspects of all the major religons into one composite whole. The finest monuments within this area are the Diwan
- i-Am, Diwan - i - Khas, Panch Mahal, Jama Masjid, Panch Mahal, Buland Darwaza
and the tomb of Saint Sheikh Salim Chisti.
Settled in the rugged hills of the Aravalis, Jaipur is the
pristine jewel in the desert sands of Rajasthan. Jaipur is as remarkable for its
marvellous architecture and town planning as it is for the lively spirit of the
people who inhabit it. The city presents a unique synthesis of culture that has
to be experienced in order to be appreciated. With its origin buried deep into the pages of history, the
city still exudes a magical old world charm; an aroma of chivalry and romance is
evident, despite having evolved into a city that is the hub of modern commercial
activity in the region. Tell-tale signs of the glorious past and regal splendour
of the city lie strewn across with gay abandon. Widely known as the 'Pink City', Jaipur is colour washed
pink to welcome Prince Albert, the consort of Queen Victoria of England who
visited India in 1883 A.D. The city was founded in 1727 A.D by one of the
greatest ruler Jai Singh II. Jaipur is surrounded by hills on three sides,
crowned by formidable forts and majestic palaces, mansions and gardens. Jaipur
is the only city in the world, which is sub-divided in to nine rectangular
sectors symbolizing nine divisions of universe. Jaipur is the first planned city
designed in accordance with 'Shilpa Shastra'- epochal treatise of Hindu
architecture. The lively spirit of fanfare, festivity and celebration of the
people adequately match the colourful and intricately carved monuments. Even
today, one can find weather beaten faces with huge colourful turbans, fierce
moustaches and lips that spontaneously crease into a heart-warming smile. A city
like Jaipur, where modernity |
